Dolly SGA - pimple, blackhead and breakout coverage, incl Easy Squeeze_October 13

Tackling the spots- Your guide to beating blackheads, pimples and full-blown breakouts.

What are they?
When that odd spot here or there turns into a blemish bonanza, that’s a breakout. “Up to 85 percent of teenagers will experience significant breakouts” says Dr Philippa McCaffery from Clearskincare Clinics. So at least you know you’re not alone.

How to get rid of them:
Your stress and hormone levels are the biggest cause of breakouts. While you can’t control your hormones, find ways to manage stress and also avoid smoking at all costs. If you’re suffering from lots of spots, pimple cream can eliminate them one-by-one. “Spot creams should be applied as soon as you feel a pimple forming, and applied regularly until the pimple heals,” says Dr Philippa.

What are they?
“Blackheads are formed when oil and dead skin cells block the opening of a pore. When this plug is exposed to oxygen, it turns black, “ says Dr Philippa.

How to get rid of them:
If your blackheads are mainly on your nose, firstly give pore strips a go before trying to remove any of the spots yourself. Never try to dig your blackheads out using your fingernails or a pin, as this can lead to scarring. Instead, use a toner with salicylic acid, as this helps to dissolve the oil plugs and clear out your pores.

What are they?
Pimples set up camp on our face when a blackhead becomes infected with bacteria. Mixed with excess oil and dead skin cells, this bacteria bursts out of your pore and creates a whitehead just under the surface of your skin.

How to get rid of them:
“The best treatment for pimple is prevention,” says Dr Philippa. So, make sure you’re cleansing regularly to keep those pores clean. If you’re going to squeeze a pimple (something most of us can’t resist!) at least do it right. After a warm shower, use clean fingers (or a squeezing device) to gently press the area around the pimple until the contents start to spill out. However if the pimple isn’t popping easily, stop what you’re doing because squeezing too forcefully can leave you with a nasty scar.

The treatment that kills spots FOREVER
Yes, pimples, blemishes, zits – whatever you call ‘em – seriously suck. But if yours are a little worse than everyone else’s, you might want to look into taking them on with extra force. Sebaceous Gland Ablation (SGA) is a treatment where a super-fine probe (like a tiny needle) is used to deactivate your overactive glands, stopping them from producing oil and forming pimples or blackheads. Most people need between 6-10 treatments to see the effects and it can be pricey. Find out more at
